the plan

When I book senior portrait sessions, my icebreaker is always “tell me about yourself.” I’m genuinely interested in all of my clients’ backgrounds, the things they love, and their personalities, but I also learned early on that this information is so helpful in planning portrait sessions, especially for high school seniors.

Liz told me that she’s interested in history, started her high school’s book club, does mock trial and debate, and loves music. She also wants to study abroad, and her favorite color is French Blue. These details helped me design a senior portrait session that would showcase who Liz is at this moment in time: an old soul who is curious about the world.

That said, Liz and I decided to shoot her senior portraits at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, a stunning Victorian estate in Independence, and the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library in Downtown KC, an equally as beautiful art deco building. We planned for golden hour, and Liz chose three outfits in neutral tones.

the shoot

Liz and I were lucky enough to have perfect golden light for the entirety of her 2-hour session, and we took full advantage. We started at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, shooting portraits on the wrap-around porch, near some of the flowery landscaping, and throughout the green areas of the property. We kept posing simple and fluid, which is always my goal in any session and was a specific request from Liz.

Next, we drove to the downtown library and started by shooting portraits inside, both in the stacks and the vault movie theater, which I lovingly refer to as red velvet wonderland. We couldn’t end the session without some portraits on the rooftop with the library’s famous giant chess set and some of KC’s financial district architecture in the background.

the testimonial

“Oh my god. These pictures are so pretty, I teared up a little bit when I saw them. I’m so happy with the way that they turned out. Thank you so much.”
