the plan
Right off the bat, the Kelly family let me know that they wanted to include their beloved Roeland Park community in their family photos. I’m less familiar with the Roeland Park area than other parts of the Kansas City metro, so we collaborated on finding the perfect location for their session.
The Kellys also wanted lots of color in their photos for a bright, happy vibe. We landed on the Uniquely Rooted Mural, Roeland Park’s first major public mural project completed by local artists. It’s bright, colorful, vast, and centrally located, which made it perfect for this session. Since we knew the mural and surrounding trees would provide lots of color, the Kellys coordinated outfits in slightly muted earth tones.
the shoot
We planned our session for golden hour to achieve the most flattering lighting (and to keep the sun out of the kids’ eyes!), and it worked out beautifully! I started our session by walking alongside the mural with the Kellys to find the perfect spot, then grabbed a few solo shots of the kids while I got to know more about their interests. This is usually how I approach sessions with littles in order to keep the entire session laid back and fun for them while still getting some gorgeous photos for their parents.
We spent the rest of the session taking a mix of candids and posed photos, going with the flow to keep everyone engaged. In one of my favorite candids below, you’ll see the family stopping to take a look at a specific part of the mural.
